SONS ON TOP AT CUMNOCK

DUMBARTON travelled to Cumnock to meet Cumnock Juniors last night and ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.

Gaffer Jim Chapman used all his available squad for this outing against Graham Wilson's former club, plus a trialist left back.

Sons opened the scoring on 12 minutes. The Cumnock keeper mishit a clearance to Kieran Brannan and his cross was knocked home by Alan Cook (pictured). Sons then created a number of chances to extend the lead, but the first half finished with no further scoring.

The second half saw Sons start with the same line-up and before the mass substitutions got underway, the lead was extended on 53 minutes. Martin McNiff sliced through the home defence and rather than take on the keeper himself, knocked the ball into the area to allow Scott Chaplain an easy finish.

Some 20 minutes from the end, Cumnock got one back after a scramble in the box, but sub Iain Chisholm restored the two goal advantage on 77 minutes. He beat the offside trap near the halfway line and ran in before slotting the ball into the net under the advancing keeper.

This was another useful exercise and, as in the St Mirren game, the youngsters in the squad played a full part.

NEW HOME STRIP UNVEILED

DUMBARTON unveiled the new home strip at a training session at the Strathclyde Homes Stadium this morning.

New signings striker Paul Maxwell and defender Allan McManus modelled the strip, which was chosen by supporters after a vote.

Chief Executive Gilbert Lawrie said: “The strip will be worn for the first time in tomorrow's Alba Challenge Cup first round tie here at the stadium against old rivals Morton.

“The replica strip is not yet here, but should be available for supporters to buy before the first home league game against Livingston. Keep an eye on the website for first news of when it can be purchased.”

The shirt bears the logo of Rowatt Furnishings on the back, and the shorts the logo of Robert Sloan Catering on the front. The two businesses won the sponsorship opportunity in the recent Shirts n' Shorts draw.

PENALTY AGONY IN CHALLENGE CUP

DUMBARTON were put out of the ALBA Challenge Cup in a very cruel way today as they went down to Morton on penalties.

The first round tie was goalless after 90 minutes and extra time - but was not short of action.

Sons keeper Stephen Grindlay produced a vintage performance, making several great saves from the First Division side.

However, his opposite number, Colin Stewart, was also tested, and a minute from the end of extra time, turned a goalbound Paul Maxwell header over.

Ross Campbell was unsuccessful with Sons' first penalty before Alan Cook, Martin McNiff and Andy Geggan all scored. Morton had netted all four of theirs before Stewart saved from Ryan McStay.

Pre-Season Friendlies

DUMBARTON'S friendly campaign drew to a close with a 1-1 draw in a local derby match against Clydebank.

They went behind to a Mark Hailstones goal, which came after Michael White had palmed away Steven Dymock's penalty.

However, with two minutes remaining, Martin McNiff salvaged a share of the points by blasting in an equaliser.

Sons fielded a youthful side which also included three trialists, along with one or two first team players who needed match practice.

The first half was a non-event, but six minutes after the restart came the opening goal.

Alan Cook handled a goalbound shot by Mark Kilpatrick, but White managed to save from Dymock.

Hailstones, though, was first to the loose ball and fired home to give the junior side the lead.

Soon after, Sons nearly fought back with a Paul Maxwell header which was saved.

Scott Chaplain then headed against the bar, with Maxwell blasting the rebound over.

Kilpatrick went close with a header, while a Liam Mushet shot from distance was stopped by the keeper.

Then, with two minutes to go, Sons prevented a defeat to their local rivals with a late equaliser.

A Derek Carcary cross was only half cleared, and McNiff's shot from 20 yards had the keeper well beaten.

SPL STRIKER ARRIVES ON LOAN

JIM Chapman boosted his squad numbers today with the signing of St Mirren striket Jon McShane on a 6-month loan deal.

The 19-year old completed the formalities of the paperwork exercise and goes straight into the squad to face Queen of the South tomorrow.

Chapman said : "Coming to Dumbarton will be a good move for Jon as he can demonstrate to everyone his abilities.

"I'm obviously delighted to get his services and he too is keen to prove himself at Dumbarton."

JIM Chapman declared himself "bewildered" by Dumbarton's second half capitulation in losing 4-1 at Forfar Athletic.

Ross Campbell's early opener for the Loons was quickly cancelled out by Scott Chaplain's penalty.

However, a second half goal by Dale Hilson and a Chris Templeman double - the second a penalty - gave Forfar the opening day win.

The manager said: "Usually when things go against you in a game, you can see some reason as to why, but that game has left me absolutely bewildered. We had an early setback, but we showed great character and equalised through the penalty, and then, from late in the first half, we switched off. It is something I simply can't understand. Forfar came out for the second half fired up, and we just accepted that and got what we deserved."

Campbell opened the scoring on two minutes when a cross came in from the left, and after some pinball in the Sons defence, the striker slotted home.

However, just two minutes later, the visitors were level. Campbell handled Andy Geggan's cross into the area, and Chaplain scored the penalty.

Chaplain had a chance to make it 2-1 shortly after, but after rounding the keeper, his shot from the edge of the area went wide.

Sons were enjoying a lot of possession in the first half, but were creating few chances before Forfar turned the screw before half time.

Campbell and Graham Gibson each had a header in decent positions, but neither found the target.

Iain Chisholm's low drive from the edge of the area was saved before Stephen Grindlay saved well from Campbell.

The rebound from the save fell to Templeman, who stroked the ball home but was flagged offside.

Five minutes into the second half, Hilson fired home after more hesitancy in the Sons defence to restore the Loons' lead.

Eight minutes after that, Templeman had a free header at the back post from a free kick and made it 3-1.

By way of a fightback, Sons had a Geggan shot which Andy Tod cleared over his own bar, and then the keeper turned Alan Cook's free kick wide.

However, on 76 minutes, Cook fouled David Mowat in the area and Templeman converted for his second.

Dumbarton's Ross Campbell had a late shot which went wide.

AN incident-packed game saw Livingston inflict a second straight league defeat on Dumbarton.

Robbie Winters converted a first half penalty before Scott Chaplain scored a spot-kick for Sons in the second half.

However, Iain Russell hit the winner against his former club with 13 minutes remaining, despite the dismissal of another ex-Son, Michael O'Byrne, in conceding the penalty.

Sons boss Jim Chapman said: "We are always disappointed to lost but you can accept losing in the right manner. We got our pride back after last week and both teams contributed to the game well. However, we know that we made a mistake to concede the winning goal and we still have to work hard at some things."

The home side started well, with Derek Carcary's shot from the edge of the area turned wide, while the keeper also rushed out to deny Paul Maxwell.

Then, on 24 minutes, Russell went down under a challenge in the area and Winters converted the spot kick.

Two minutes later a Graham Wilson header from Ross Campbell's cross was saved.

In the second half, Maxwell was put through by Wilson, but the keeper again stopped him, deflecting his effort over.

Then a Carcary shot was spilled by the keeper, but nobody was there to take advantage.

A Maxwell header from Wilson's cross went over, but on 68 minutes, the pressure paid off.

The referee spotted an infringement in the area by O'Byrne, who was given his second yellow card. Chaplain scored the penalty to equalise.

Then Livingston had perhaps their best spell of the game when it mattered. A Winters free kick went just over before the winner came.

A long free kick was not dealt with by the Sons defence, and Russell was in to scramble home the loose ball.

DUMBARTON started the season with three straight defeats for the first time in 10 years as they went down at Ayr United.

An unlucky own goal by Paul Maxwell was all that separated the two teams in a poor match.

Sons' closest chance was when sub Derek Carcary forced two late saves from Ayr's trialist keeper.

Manager Jim Chapman said: "When you are down, you are down, and that is the way it seems to be going for us. The players worked very hard and looked in control of the game before a bad break put us a goal down. Ayr then had their best spell of the game, but we probably dominated the second half without having the cutting edge we needed."

Sons were first to threaten when Ben Gordon headed the ball down for Scott Chaplain, whos shot was just over.

Alan Trouten had a bending shot for Ayr which went just over, while Andy Geggan's free kick from 20 yards ended up in a similar position.

Eleven minutes from half time the deadlock was broken when Maxwell deflected an Ayr corner past his own keeper.

A Danny McKay volley went just wide as Sons struggled to retain the momentum they had in spells in the first half.

In the second half, Stephen Grindlay saved from Scott McLaughlin while Stephen Reynolds headed over from six yards.

A trialist midfielder crossed for Jon McShane, whose header was saved, before Carcary ran through with eight minutes remaining.

His initial effort was saved by the keeper, who then proceeded to deny him again from the rebound.

Und die nächste Niederlage, diesmal sogar durch ein unglückliches Eigentor.... :(

Bei den Sons spielten Neuverpflichtung Creaney und Stürmer Mark Gilhaney (vereinslos, vorher Alloa) als Trialist. Auch bei den Honestmen spielte ein Trialist mit: Torwartlegende Alan Main, der im Sommer eigentlich seine Karriere beendet hatte.

DEFENDER JOINS SQUAD

DEFENDER James Creaney made his Sons debut at Somerset Park today after agreeing a short-term deal just hours before kick-off.

The former Stranraer player received international clearance from his last club — Galway — allowing him to join up with the Sons squad this afternoon.

Unfortunately his presence could not stop the recent run of defeats with Dumbarton losing 1-0 to Ayr United.

TWO PLAYERS CHECK IN

SONS boss Jim Chapman has clinched deals for two new players ahead of tomorrow's visit to East Fife.

Joining from SPL outfit Motherwell on a six-month loan switch is striker Gary Smith, who was last season's under-19 league top scorer with 17 goals.

The 18-year-old will hope to replicate the success of his Fir Park team-mate Ross Forbes, who was at SHS as part of the Third Division title-winning squad of 2009.

Midfielder Mark Gilhaney, who has been on trial in recent games, has also become a signed player.

He was with Alloa last season, having also played for Clyde, Dundee and Hamilton Accies.

The 25-year-old came off the bench in last week's 1-0 defeat to Ayr United and also played in the midweek Stirlingshire Cup win over Stenhousemuir.

Both players are in the squad for tomorrow's visit to New Bayview.
