Debt down but losses a concern at Kilmarnock

richard wilson, 17 Feb 2011

Kilmarnock recorded a loss of almost £500,000 during the last financial year, but the club’s financial results were improved by Jamie Moffat, the former chairman, writing off £900,000 of a loan he granted while a director of the club.

Moffat is still owed £885,000, but the gesture reduced Kilmarnock’s debt from £11.2m to £10.5m.

A difficult season on the pitch contributed to a fall in turnover from £6.8m to £6.1m, although the club reduced costs from £1m to £891,402. Without Moffat’s generosity, the loss of £466,647 would have been more severe, and added to the debt, while the figures reflect the general downturn in income that Scottish clubs are enduring in this global recession.

“The ongoing effect of the collapse of Setanta in 2009 combined with an 11th-place finish in the SPL and a lack of success in either cup competition resulted in a significant trading loss,” said chairman Michael Johnston in his statement accompanying the annual results. “This was off-set to a major extent by the generosity of Jamie Moffat in writing off £900,000 of his loan account.

“[The] magnitude of trading loss cannot be sustained, and steps have been taken in the current financial year to reduce the player wage bill. However, new capital requires to be introduced to place the club on a healthier financial footing and avoid the prospect of player sales or a further cut in the first-team budget.”

Johnston is willing to sell shares in the club in return for fresh investment, but Moffat writing off the remainder of his loan account might be the more likely development to improve next year’s results. Johnston also made reference to the relief of avoiding relegation on the final day of last season, when a fall into the first division would have had a far-reaching affect on the club’s finances.

Mixu Paatelainen to leave Kilmarnock and take Finland job

By John Barnes
BBC Scotland Kilmarnock manager Mixu Paatelainen Paatelainen has worked wonders during his short time at Rugby Park

Mixu Paatelainen is to leave Kilmarnock and take over as the manager of Finland.

Having rejected an approach from Scunthorpe United, the 44-year-old found the lure of his national side too hard to resist.

Finland have arranged a press conference for Thursday afternoon, while Kilmarnock are also set to make a lunchtime statement.

Paatelainen agreed a two-year deal at Kilmarnock in June 2010.

Last season, relegation threatened the Ayrshire side but this term Paatelainen has them set for a top-six finish and in contention for a European place playing some of the most entertaining football in the Scottish Premier League.

Killie were anxious to keep the Finn and had hoped to keep him on with the offer of an improved longer-term deal.

Paatelainen, capped 70 times by his country, will succeed Stuart Baxter, who was sacked by Finland in November.

Defender Ryan O'Leary rejoins Kilmarnock

Kilmarnock have signed Ryan O'Leary for a second time.

The defender left the club at the end of last season after spending five years at Rugby Park.

Scotland Under-21 cap O'Leary, who had a spell on loan at Dundee last term, has signed a short-term deal until the end of the season.

And the 23-year-old stopper becomes the first signing made by caretaker manager Kenny Shiels, who has taken over from Mixu Paatelainen.

Kilmarnock impressed by Brazilian trialists

Nathan Bordignon and Sergio Paulista will play in a further closed doors match for Killie after turning out in a bounce game against Hamilton Academical.

Kilmarnock caretaker boss Kenny Shiels will continue to run the rule over Brazilian trialists Nathan Bordignon and Sergio Paulista, after the pair impressed in a closed doors match against Hamilton Academical.

The duo, who are both available on free transfers and both hold dual European nationality, will continue to train with the Rugby Park club and will play in a second bounce match against Greenock Morton next Monday.

Shiels is understood to have been impressed by left-footed striker Bordignon, with the 18-year-old demonstrating considerable potential and temperament in the game against the Accies.

Bordignon, who also has an Italian passport, came through the youth ranks at Sporting Lisbon before returning to his homeland to play for Internacional and Juventude.

Paulista meanwhile arrived in Scotland late on Tuesday night but was keen to feature in the match despite a long flight from Brazil, impressing in midfield before picking up a head injury.

The 24-year-old, who hold a Portuguese passport, spent four years in Spain’s lower leagues with Cartagena, CD Eldense and SD Noja, before returning to play in Brazil with Aperibeense.
